Most affiliate programs pay only after a sale. The commissions usually range from 4 percent up to 75 percent or more. A company offers to pay a certain commission for each sale -- although it could also be another type of action -- generated by the affiliate.

Even if a visitor doesn't make a purchase immediately on the first visit, most programs will track the referrers for certain amount of time and credit them appropriately. Some affiliate programs allow lifetime tracking, although most are around 30-90 days.

Each affiliate program has its own policy regarding how to promote their product or service. For one affiliate program, they may allow you to bid on their trademark in the search engine, but others forbid this practice explicitly.

Most programs frown upon spamming through. It means, you can't promote the product or service by mass email to recipients who are not in the list of your prospects or customers. The name in your list should be the name you collect on your site through one or other legitimate methods.

It is allowed to use advertising, but buying millions of names from unknown source certainly is not.

Make sure you read the terms of use and policy of one affiliate program before you promote the program. The last thing you want is to make a lot of money from the program, just to find that you are not paid, or your account is suspended for not complying to the rules.

Nowadays, there are a lot of affiliate programs who are seeking for hard working affiliates. Don't set for the less when you can get a better one that is willing to work with their affiliates and are more flexible.

Affiliate program should listen to their affiliates and see them as partners instead of imposing a lot of rules that scare them away.
